The Foundation provides resources for research projects that ensure continued growth and opportunities for the industry and employees, which in turn benefit our guests. This section provides summaries of past and present projects, and allows you to apply for a grant.
Since 1995, the Foundation has distributed approximately $4 million toward grants to benefit the lodging industry. This year, the Foundation's annual budget for its research and project funding program is $354,000, of which $56,000 is specifically earmarked for technology research. Unsolicited applications are accepted three times a year - March 15, June 15, and September 15 - from individuals or organizations wishing to conduct research in the lodging industry.
Research Grant Application Details
The Research and Project Funding Committee oversees the grant program and makes funding recommendations to the AHLEF board. Typically, AHLEF budgets around $350,000 each year; however, if the committee does not deem that any projects are worthy of funding, it will not disburse the monies.

before submitting an application. These guidelines contain specific information regarding eligible use of funds, policy, and grant regulations, as well as the application instructions and submittal requirements. Applicants are encouraged to review the program's
before beginning the application process. All funding requests must be submitted through AHLEF's online application.
All applicants are assigned a user name and password and have the opportunity to edit their proposal up until they submit it for consideration. After hitting the submit button, applicants will be unable to make any edits. AHLEF staff will send an email confirmation after submission. The application will be considered during the next review cycle. The deadline dates are March 15, June 15 and September 15. The Research Committee will meet approximately two to three weeks after the deadline date to review the submissions. All funding recommendations are presented to the AHLEF board, which typically meets in May/June and November, before final funding approval is given. Any funding recommendations from the mid-year review will be forwarded to the board via electronic ballot.
Note that applicants should keep the audience in mind when writing the proposal and explain in layman's terms. The research committee is comprised primarily of hotel operators, and the final product/research result should be of value to the average hotelier. If the committee does not understand your proposal, it will likely not be funded. Applications missing any critical information such as a narrative, methodology, budget, or appropriate contact information will not be reviewed. The grant narrative must adequately describe the proposed research and how it will be conducted. If not, it will either be denied funding or sent back to the applicant to re-submit at the next deadline date.
